A doctoral scholarship is awarded to students in doctoral study programmes who meet the conditions for its award. Its types are
Basic doctoral scholarship - a regular monthly amount paid throughout the entire academic year (12 months). It is awarded in the monthly amount set by the Rector's directive.
The basic doctoral scholarship is paid only to students in the full-time form of study and is paid for a period of study that does not exceed the standard period of study; all periods of previous unsuccessful studies in doctoral study programmes are included in this period of study.
If a student does not fulfil the study obligations arising from the individual study plan, an internal regulation of Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) or the Doctoral Study Regulations, the Dean may reduce the monthly entitlement scholarship.
Scholarship supplementing doctoral study income (“top-up scholarship”)
The top-up scholarship is awarded, on the basis of an application submitted, to students who study in the full-time form of study in their first doctoral programme, provided they have not exceeded the standard period of study.
For students enrolled before 1 September 2025 whose first teaching period started before 1 September 2025, it is awarded only if their individual study plan or its amendment was approved by the relevant field board after 1 July 2025. The top-up scholarship is awarded by the Dean and is paid monthly.
The amount of the top-up scholarship is determined as follows:
a) if the student’s doctoral study income within the meaning of Section 91a(1) of the Act consists solely of a scholarship, the top-up scholarship is awarded in the amount of the minimum monthly wage multiplied by the coefficient 1.2, reduced by the sum of the monthly amounts of scholarships awarded under (a) and then rounded up to whole tens of Czech crowns,
b) if the student’s doctoral study income within the meaning of Section 91a(1) of the Act consists of a combination of a monthly wage agreed for work in which the student, as an employee of CTU or a cooperating employer (Section 91a(1) of the Act), performs, within an employment relationship, creative activity related to the preparation of their dissertation, and a top-up scholarship, the top-up scholarship is awarded so that the sum of two thirds of the monthly wage, the sum of the monthly amounts of entitlement and non-entitlement scholarships awarded, and the sum of the monthly amount of the top-up scholarship is not lower than the minimum monthly wage multiplied by the coefficient 1.2 and then rounded up to whole tens of Czech crowns upwards;
For the calculation of the top-up scholarship, the decisive minimum monthly wage for the relevant academic year is the amount of the minimum monthly wage valid and effective as of 1 July preceding the start of the given academic year.
If the student’s doctoral study income within the meaning of Section 91a(1) of the Act reaches at least the amount of the minimum monthly wage multiplied by the coefficient 1.2 and then rounded up to whole tens of Czech crowns, the top-up scholarship need not be awarded and any top-up scholarship already awarded may be reduced or withdrawn.
The Dean may also increase the top-up scholarship ex officio. The Dean is obliged to do so at all times for the purpose of meeting the statutory requirement for the amount of doctoral study income in relation to a student enrolled on or after 1 September 2025, or enrolled before that date if their first teaching period within that programme started after 1 September 2025. This does not apply in the case of a student who seriously fails to fulfil study obligations arising from the individual study plan
Non-entitlement doctoral scholarship is awarded by the Dean at the initiative of the supervisor, the head of the department (institute) or the field board as a one-off payment or as a monthly amount paid for a specified period of the academic year for excellent results in teaching and creative activities, for participation in research projects, or for submitting the dissertation before the end of the standard period of study. This scholarship may be awarded in both the full-time and combined forms of study.
